A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing the month of September 2002 as "National Alcohol and 2 Drug Addiction Recovery Month" and September 24, 2002, as 3 "Substance Abuse Awareness Day." 4 WHEREAS, Alcoholism and drug addiction continue to be a major 5 public health problem in this Commonwealth and the nation as a 6 whole; and 7 WHEREAS, One out of ten Pennsylvanians suffers from the 8 disease of addiction; and 9 WHEREAS, One out of every four families is affected, having a 10 member with an addiction to alcohol or other drugs; and 11 WHEREAS, The cost to society for addiction is more than both 12 heart disease and cancer combined; and 13 WHEREAS, Both young people and adults respond to treatment 14 with early intervention; and 15 WHEREAS, Investment in treatment reduces costs associated 16 with medical care and crimes related to alcohol and drugs; and 17 WHEREAS, The savings to the Commonwealth are $7 for every $1
1 invested in treatment; and 2 WHEREAS, Throughout the nation the month of September 2002 is 3 "National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month"; and 4 WHEREAS, The yearly observation of "National Alcohol and Drug 5 Addiction Recovery Month" focuses on recovery and the tremendous 6 strides taken by individuals who have undergone successful 7 treatment for this disease; and 8 WHEREAS, "National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month" 9 not only allows the Commonwealth and its communities to 10 recognize the dignity of recovery and benefits of treatment but 11 also helps reduce the negative effects of the stigma associated 12 with the disease; therefore be it 13 RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the month of September 14 2002 as "National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month" and 15 September 24, 2002, as "Substance Abuse Awareness Day" and urge 16 all residents to learn more about this disease.
