A RESOLUTION 1 Extending condolences on the passing of Ambassador Walter Hubert 2 Annenberg of Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, and Rancho Mirage, 3 California, a generous benefactor of public education and the 4 arts who died on October 1, 2002, at 94 years of age. 5 WHEREAS, Born March 13, 1908, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 6 Ambassador Annenberg was involved in and later inherited the 7 publishing empire developed by his father, Moses Annenberg, and 8 he launched and presided over many successful multimedia 9 ventures; and 10 WHEREAS, Ambassador Annenberg's compassion for the poor and 11 powerless led him to donate generously to civic and social 12 causes for children, education and the arts; and 13 WHEREAS, Ambassador Annenberg established schools for 14 communication at the University of Pennsylvania and the 15 University of Southern California, founded the Annenberg 16 Institute for School Reform at Brown University and the 17 Annenberg Washington Program in Communications Policy Studies at 18 Northwestern University and contributed generously to the
1 Corporation for Public Broadcasting; and 2 WHEREAS, Ambassador Annenberg assembled one of the world's 3 finest private collections of 19th Century Impressionist and 4 post-Impressionist artwork; and 5 WHEREAS, Among his many contributions to American culture, 6 Ambassador Annenberg donated significant collections to the 7 Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art; and 8 WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Museum of Art named The Annenberg 9 Galleries in honor of Ambassador Annenberg and his wife Leonore 10 in 1994; and 11 WHEREAS, He served as United States Ambassador to the Court 12 of St. James in Britain from 1969 through 1974; and 13 WHEREAS, Queen Elizabeth II conferred honorary knighthood on 14 Ambassador Annenberg in 1976; therefore be it 15 RESOLVED, That the Senate note with sadness the passing of 16 Ambassador Walter Hubert Annenberg and acknowledge his indelible 17 citizenship, public service and philanthropy; and be it further 18 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to 19 the family of Ambassador Walter Hubert Annenberg.
