                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending the act of March 10, 1949 (P.L.30, No.14), entitled "An
     2     act relating to the public school system, including certain
     3     provisions applicable as well to private and parochial
     4     schools; amending, revising, consolidating and changing the
     5     laws relating thereto," mandating student assistance programs
     6     for detection and referral of student drug and alcohol
     7     problems in school districts.

     8     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     9  hereby enacts as follows:
    10     Section 1.  Section 1547 of the act of March 10, 1949
    11  (P.L.30, No.14), known as the Public School Code of 1949, is
    12  amended by adding a subsection to read:
    13     Section 1547.  Alcohol and Chemical Abuse Program.--* * *
    14     (c)  Each school district shall establish a Student
    15  Assistance Program providing school personnel with the knowledge
    16  and skills necessary to identify students using alcohol or drugs
    17  and, upon detection, to make referrals to professional
    18  evaluators for treatment and service. A Student Assistance
    19  Program shall be established in each school district prior to
    20  January 1, 1990.

     1     Section 2.  This act shall take effect immediately.
