           TARTAGLIONE, LOGAN, KUKOVICH, THOMPSON, STOUT, BODACK, EARLL,
           TOMLINSON, MUSTO, COSTA, LEMMOND, GREENLEAF, WENGER, HOLL,
           DENT, M. WHITE, MOWERY, BRIGHTBILL, MURPHY, KITCHEN, O'PAKE,
           CONTI, RHOADES, C. WILLIAMS, SCHWARTZ, STACK AND KASUNIC,
           NOVEMBER 13, 2002

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, NOVEMBER 13, 2002

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of November 2002 as "Pancreatic Cancer
     2     Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, "Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month" is being
     4  observed in this Commonwealth to create awareness of pancreatic
     5  cancer, the fourth leading cause of cancer death among men and
     6  women in the United States; and
     7     WHEREAS, More than 30,300 people will be diagnosed with
     8  pancreatic cancer this year alone in the United States, and nine
     9  out of every ten pancreatic cancer patients will die; and
    10     WHEREAS, There are currently no early detection methods and
    11  minimal treatment options for pancreatic cancer; and
    12     WHEREAS, By the time symptoms generally present themselves,
    13  it is too late for a positive prognosis; and
    14     WHEREAS, The average survival after diagnosis is only three
    15  to six months; and
    16     WHEREAS, Pancreatic cancer does not discriminate by age,

     1  gender or race; and
     2     WHEREAS, The Federal Government invests less money in
     3  pancreatic cancer research than in any other leading cancer
     4  research; and
     5     WHEREAS, The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, Inc. (PanCAN),
     6  the premiere voice of advocacy for pancreatic cancer, exists to
     7  create awareness, education and funding to ultimately find the
     8  cure for pancreatic cancer; and
     9     WHEREAS, PanCAN is having the fifth annual "An Evening with
    10  the Stars" celebrity fundraiser on November 9, 2002, in Beverly
    11  Hills, California, to raise awareness of pancreatic cancer and
    12  generate much-needed funding for ongoing research to find early
    13  detection methods and a cure; therefore be it
    14     RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of November
    15  2002 as "Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
