A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the 40th annual celebration of Earth Day, which will

2

be on April 22, 2010.

WHEREAS, April 22, 2010, is the 40th celebration of Earth

4

Day; and

5

WHEREAS, The concept of Earth Day was to encourage Americans

6

to contemplate the damage being done to the earth through

7

pollution, and it is estimated that over 20 million people

8

participated in the first Earth Day; and

9

WHEREAS, The importance of being good stewards of the earth

10

has become a nearly universally held belief among the people of

11

this country and this Commonwealth, and this stewardship

12

produces an environment that is good for our health, our economy

13

and the plants and animals that inhabit the planet with us; and

14

WHEREAS, The first Earth Day in 1970 was a celebration and

15

recognition of a watershed moment in the protection and care of

16

the environment in the United States, but on its 40th

17

anniversary Earth Day will be celebrated in over 190 countries

throughout the world; and

WHEREAS, The Constitution of Pennsylvania is an important

3

declaration of Earth Day policies as it states "The people have

4

a right to clean air, pure water, and to the preservation of the

5

natural, scenic, historic and esthetic values of the

6

environment. Pennsylvania's public natural resources are the

7

common property of all the people, including generations yet to

8

come. As trustee of these resources, the Commonwealth shall

9

conserve and maintain them for the benefit of all the people";

10

and

11

WHEREAS, Earth Day events and activities are designed to

12

encourage environmentally aware behaviors such as recycling,

13

using energy efficiently, utilizing environmentally friendly

14

products, reducing pollution and reducing or reusing disposable

15

items; and

16

WHEREAS, Dozens of events have been scheduled to observe

17

Earth Day in Pennsylvania, including a cleanup of North Park in

18

Allegheny County; therefore be it

19

RESOLVED, That the Senate encourage all citizens to observe

20

the 40th annual celebration of Earth Day on April 22, 2010; and

21

be it further

22

RESOLVED, That the Senate urge Pennsylvanians, when possible,

23

to strive to clean up our environment and enjoy the beauty of

24

Penn's Woods.
