        INTRODUCED BY WAUGH, BOSCOLA, MUSTO, FERLO, PUNT, STOUT, COSTA,
           KASUNIC, TARTAGLIONE, WENGER, LOGAN, FONTANA, KITCHEN, CONTI,
           RAFFERTY, ORIE, BRIGHTBILL, EARLL, PIPPY, O'PAKE, D. WHITE,
           LAVALLE, ERICKSON, BROWNE, GREENLEAF AND LEMMOND,
           SEPTEMBER 19, 2006

        REFERRED TO RULES AND EXECUTIVE NOMINATIONS, SEPTEMBER 19, 2006

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of September 2006 as "Polycystic Kidney
     2     Disease Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Polycystic kidney disease affects 12.5 million
     4  individuals around the world; and
     5     WHEREAS, Polycystic kidney disease is the country's most
     6  common life-threatening genetic disease, affecting 600,000
     7  Americans and over 24,500 Pennsylvanians; and
     8     WHEREAS, Polycystic kidney disease affects people of every
     9  age, race and ethnic origin; and
    10     WHEREAS, The number of people suffering from polycystic
    11  kidney disease is greater than the combined number of people who
    12  have cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, hemophilia, sickle
    13  cell anemia, Down syndrome and Huntington's disease; and
    14     WHEREAS, More than half of those with polycystic kidney
    15  disease develop kidney failure, meaning that dialysis and,
    16  ultimately, a transplant are the only available treatments; and


     1     WHEREAS, Polycystic kidney disease is one of the four leading
     2  causes of kidney failure and costs the Federal Government over
     3  $2 billion annually through Medicare and Medicaid for dialysis,
     4  transplants and related treatments; and
     5     WHEREAS, There is currently no known cure for polycystic
     6  kidney disease; and
     7     WHEREAS, The Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation is the only
     8  organization dedicated to improving clinical treatment for this
     9  disease and ultimately finding a cure; and
    10     WHEREAS, On September 16, 2006, the South Central
    11  Pennsylvania Chapter of the foundation held its annual walk to
    12  raise both funds and awareness of this disease; therefore be it
    13     RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of September
    14  2006 as "Polycystic Kidney Disease Awareness Month" in
    15  Pennsylvania.
