A RESOLUTION

Designating September 21, 2012, as "POW/MIA Recognition Day" in

2

Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, For most Americans, the wars and armed conflicts in

4

which United States military personnel have engaged evoke

5

painful memories; and

6

WHEREAS, For former prisoners of war and the families of

7

missing personnel, these memories and emotions are particularly

8

agonizing; and

9

WHEREAS, In the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict, hundreds

10

of thousands of brave Americans left their homes and families to

11

defend freedom and democracy in the face of communist

12

aggression; and

13

WHEREAS, The Persian Gulf War, Operation Iraqi Freedom,

14

Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation New Dawn and the Global

15

War on Terror have created a new generation of POW/MIA heroes

16

who have sacrificed so much to protect the freedoms enjoyed by

17

the citizens of the United States and to provide freedom and

18

democracy for oppressed persons living in countries controlled

by dictators and terrorist regimes; and

2

WHEREAS, Thousands of American military personnel lost their

3

lives in battle, and the fate of as many as 85,000 Americans

4

from past conflicts is still unknown; and

5

WHEREAS, Many Americans held captive were subjected to

6

unspeakable horrors but maintained their honor, strong faith in

7

our nation and indomitable spirit; and

8

WHEREAS, Approximately 50,000 courageous former prisoners of

9

war live among us, including those held captive during World War

10

II, who all still cope with the physical and emotional scars of

11

their captivity; and

12

WHEREAS, We owe a profound debt of gratitude to the quiet

13

heroes who served our nation so well and sacrificed so much, and

14

to the families of those still missing in action we pledge our

15

unwavering commitment to achieving the fullest possible

16

accounting of their loved ones and to seek the recovery,

17

repatriation and identification of the remains of those who have

18

lost their lives; and

19

WHEREAS, The flag of the National League of Families of

20

American Prisoners of War and Missing in Southeast Asia, a black

21

and white banner symbolizing America's missing service members

22

and our unshakable resolve to ascertain their fate, is flown as

23

a powerful reminder of our duty to honor and account for all

24

persons who have so faithfully served in all wars and conflicts

25

in which the United States was engaged; therefore be it

26

RESOLVED, That the Senate designate September 21, 2012, as

27

"POW/MIA Recognition Day" in Pennsylvania.
