SENATE RESOLUTION

No. 352 Session of 2008


        INTRODUCED BY FOLMER, PICCOLA, GREENLEAF, BOSCOLA, ORIE,
           EICHELBERGER, PUNT, BRUBAKER, M. WHITE, STOUT, DINNIMAN AND
           PILEGGI, JUNE 29, 2008

        REFERRED TO RULES AND EXECUTIVE NOMINATIONS, JUNE 29, 2008

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Commemorating the contributions of Milton Friedman and the 96th
     2     birthday of Milton Friedman on July 31, 2008.

     3     WHEREAS, Milton Friedman was one of the most influential
     4  economists of the 20th century; and
     5     WHEREAS, Milton Friedman made so many contributions to
     6  economics and statistics that he was awarded the Presidential
     7  Medal of Freedom, the National Medal of Science and the 1976
     8  Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics; and
     9     WHEREAS, Milton Friedman helped restore our faith in the
    10  freedom of the individual to choose in every sense of the word
    11  -- political, economic and social -- and was devoted to the
    12  simple idea that we are responsible for our own lives, to live
    13  as we see fit as long as it does not violate the liberty of
    14  others; and
    15     WHEREAS, Milton Friedman shared his knowledge through many
    16  books and projects such as his television series "Free to
    17  Choose," which provided real-world examples of how the free


     1  market has solved various social and political problems; and
     2     WHEREAS, Milton Friedman championed many causes throughout
     3  his life, chief among them the idea that parents should be able
     4  to choose the education best suited for their child and that
     5  competition among schools would improve the educational system;
     6  and
     7     WHEREAS, Milton Friedman has left us, but his ideas will
     8  always live on in the hearts and minds of people everywhere who
     9  cherish the power of the individual and liberty; and
    10     WHEREAS, Milton Friedman would have been 96 years of age on
    11  July 31, 2008; therefore be it
    12     RESOLVED, That the Senate commemorate the many contributions
    13  of Milton Friedman which led to the betterment of the lives of
    14  Pennsylvanians as well as the 96th birthday of Milton Friedman
    15  on July 31, 2008.
