SENATE RESOLUTION

No. 360 Session of 2006


        INTRODUCED BY JUBELIRER, MELLOW AND PICCOLA, OCTOBER 3, 2006

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, OCTOBER 3, 2006

                            A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

     1  Honoring Grace Methodist Episcopal Church for providing a
     2     temporary State Capitol.

     3     WHEREAS, Grace Methodist Episcopal Church was dedicated at
     4  West State Street, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on March 10, 1878;
     5  and
     6     WHEREAS, A catastrophic fire on February 2, 1897, destroyed
     7  the State Capitol; and
     8     WHEREAS, In order to assure that the sessions of the General
     9  Assembly would not be interrupted and that the State Capitol
    10  would remain in Harrisburg, the congregation of Grace Methodist
    11  Episcopal Church offered the use of their building for sessions
    12  of the Senate and of the House of Representatives; and
    13     WHEREAS, Each chamber of the General Assembly met in the
    14  Church from February 8, 1897, through December 31, 1898; and
    15     WHEREAS, The immeasurable generosity shown by the
    16  congregation allowed the Commonwealth to enjoy uninterrupted
    17  government despite the loss of the needed facilities; and
    18     WHEREAS, The successor of the Grace Methodist Episcopal

     1  Church is the Grace United Methodist Church; therefore be it
     2     RESOLVED (the House of Representatives concurring), That the
     3  General Assembly gratefully acknowledge and honor the Grace
     4  Methodist Episcopal Church for the invaluable gift by its
     5  congregation over 100 years ago; and be it further
     6     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be delivered to the
     7  Grace United Methodist Church at 216 State Street, Harrisburg,
     8  Pennsylvania.
