        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, SEPTEMBER 24, 2008

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing the month of October 2008 as "Breast Cancer
     2     Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Women's health is essential to the health of our
     4  families, our communities and our society; and
     5     WHEREAS, Approximately 9,500 women in this Commonwealth are
     6  diagnosed each year with breast cancer and approximately 2,200
     7  women in this Commonwealth die each year of breast cancer; and
     8     WHEREAS, Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths
     9  in this Commonwealth in women between the ages of 25 and 54; and
    10     WHEREAS, Three of four cases of breast cancer arise in women
    11  with no known risk factors; and
    12     WHEREAS, Breast cancer continues to be the most commonly
    13  diagnosed cancer in women in the United States, regardless of
    14  race or ethnicity; and
    15     WHEREAS, There are more than two million breast cancer

     1  survivors alive today in the United States; and
     2     WHEREAS, Nearly all breast cancers can be treated
     3  successfully if found early; and
     4     WHEREAS, When breast cancer is found at its earliest stage,
     5  the five-year survival rate is 98%; and
     6     WHEREAS, One in seven women in the United States will be
     7  diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime; therefore be
     8  it
     9     RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the month of October 2008
    10  as "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania, applaud the
    11  thousands of professionals and volunteers in the fight against
    12  breast cancer and encourage all women to take advantage of the
    13  early detection services available to them.
