A RESOLUTION

Designating October 3, 2010, as "Pulaski Memorial Day" in

2

Pennsylvania commemorating the 231st anniversary of his death

3

in 1779.

4

WHEREAS, General Casimir Pulaski was born March 6, 1745, in

5

Warsaw, Poland; and

6

WHEREAS, General Pulaski was a true patriot committed to the

7

defense of freedom and the sovereignty of nations; and

8

WHEREAS, General Pulaski, who fought against Russian,

9

Austrian and Prussian control of Poland, was forced to flee his

10

country for France, where he met and became a close friend of

11

the American representative and statesman Benjamin Franklin; and

12

WHEREAS, General Pulaski joined the Continental Army and

13

proved himself to be a brilliant tactician and leader; and

14

WHEREAS, General Pulaski's valiant skills and services to the

15

American Revolution brought him honor and acclaim; and

16

WHEREAS, Named General of the Cavalry on September 15, 1777,

17

General Pulaski earned the title of "Father of the American

Cavalry"; and

WHEREAS, General Pulaski commanded the cavalry in battles at

3

Brandywine and Germantown, Pennsylvania; and

4

WHEREAS, In May 1779 General Pulaski contributed to the

5

successful defense of Charleston, South Carolina, against a

6

larger British force, breaking British momentum and boosting the

7

morale of American troops; and

8

WHEREAS, In October 1779 General Pulaski led a charge behind

9

the French line of infantry to break the British defense in the

10

siege of Savannah, Georgia, where he was mortally wounded; and

11

WHEREAS, General Pulaski's lifework and ideals are a source

12

of strength and pride to Americans of Polish ancestry and

13

reflect the customs and culture of the Polish people; therefore

14

be it

15

RESOLVED, That the Senate designate October 3, 2010, as

16

"Pulaski Memorial Day" in Pennsylvania commemorating the 231st

17

anniversary of his death in 1779; and be it further

18

RESOLVED, That the Senate extend best wishes to the Polish

19

American community in Philadelphia on the 77th anniversary of

20

the Pulaski Day Parade.
