                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending the act of March 10, 1949 (P.L.30, No.14), entitled "An
     2     act relating to the public school system, including certain
     3     provisions applicable as well to private and parochial
     4     schools; amending, revising, consolidating and changing the
     5     laws relating thereto," further providing for number and
     6     election of board of school directors in school districts of
     7     the second, third and fourth classes and for terms of their
     8     offices.

     9     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
    10  hereby enacts as follows:
    11     Section 1.  Section 303(a) of the act of March 10, 1949
    12  (P.L.30, No.14), known as the Public School Code of 1949,
    13  amended December 17, 1982 (P.L.1378, No.316), is amended to
    14  read:
    15     Section 303.  Number and Election in Districts of the Second,
    16  Third and Fourth Classes; Terms of Office.--(a)  (1)  In each
    17  school district of the second class, and on and after July 1,
    18  1966, or if there is advance establishment July 1, 1964, or July
    19  1, 1965, as the case may be, in each school district of the
    20  second, third and fourth class, there shall be a board of nine


     1  (9) school directors, who, except as otherwise provided in this
     2  act, shall be elected at large for terms of six (6) years. The
     3  terms of three of the members shall expire on the first Monday
     4  of December of each odd numbered year, as now provided by law.
     5  At each municipal election, three school directors, except as
     6  otherwise provided in this act, shall be elected at large for
     7  terms of six (6) years. Their terms of office shall begin on the
     8  first Monday of December following their election.
     9     (2)  Beginning with the terms to be filled at the municipal
    10  election held in 1979 and each odd numbered year [thereafter]
    11  through 2001, the terms of school directors so elected shall be
    12  four (4) years, except that at the municipal election in 1983,
    13  five (5) school directors shall be elected for terms of four (4)
    14  years and one (1) for a term of two (2) years. At the municipal
    15  election in 1985 and every four (4) years [thereafter] through
    16  1999, four (4) directors shall be elected for terms of four (4)
    17  years. At the municipal election in 1987 and every four (4)
    18  years [thereafter] through 2001, five (5) directors shall be
    19  elected for terms of four (4) years. The board shall select by
    20  lot, prior to the time for filing of nomination petitions, the
    21  vacancy that is to be filled for a two (2) year term in 1983.
    22     (3)  Beginning with the terms to be filled at the municipal
    23  election held in 2003, the terms of school directors so elected
    24  shall be six (6) years, except that at the municipal election in
    25  2003 and every six (6) years thereafter, five (5) directors
    26  shall be elected for terms of six (6) years. At the municipal
    27  election in 2005 and every six (6) years thereafter, four (4)
    28  directors shall be elected for terms of six (6) years.
