SENATE BILL

                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending the act of March 10, 1949 (P.L.30, No.14), entitled "An
     2     act relating to the public school system, including certain
     3     provisions applicable as well to private and parochial
     4     schools; amending, revising, consolidating and changing the
     5     laws relating thereto," further providing for courses of
     6     study adapted to age and other factors of pupils; and making
     7     an editorial change.

     8     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     9  hereby enacts as follows:
    10     Section 1.  Section 1512 of the act of March 10, 1949
    11  (P.L.30, No.14), known as the Public School Code of 1949, is
    12  amended to read:
    13     Section 1512.  Courses of Study Adapted to Age, etc. of
    14  Pupils.--(a)  The board of school directors in every school
    15  district, with the advice, assistance and approval of the proper
    16  superintendent of schools, shall arrange a course or courses of
    17  study adapted to the age, development, and needs of the pupils.
    18  These courses of study shall conform to any general course of
    19  study arranged by the [Superintendent of Public Instruction]
    20  Secretary of Education, so far as the local conditions in the


     1  respective districts permit.
     2     (b)  (1)  In the case of a pupil who is temporarily excused
     3  by a school district from complying with the compulsory
     4  attendance requirements of this act due to a mental, physical or
     5  other urgent reason and who receives homebound instruction in
     6  accordance with rules and procedures adopted by the school
     7  district, the school district shall provide instruction services
     8  that reasonably duplicate the level of instruction and courses
     9  of study provided to pupils in the classroom.
    10     (2)  The Department of Education shall promulgate regulations
    11  to implement this subsection.
    12     Section 2.  This act shall take effect in 60 days.
