SENATE BILL

           WENGER, ANDREZESKI, SCANLON, STAPLETON, SALVATORE AND FATTAH,
           MAY 31, 1989

        AS AMENDED ON THIRD CONSIDERATION, JUNE 28, 1989

                                     AN ACT

     1  Designating the Province of Taiwan, Republic of China, as a
     2     "sister state."

     3     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     4  hereby enacts as follows:
     5  Section 1.  Purpose.
     6     The General Assembly finds it would be beneficial to both
     7  Pennsylvania and the Province of Taiwan, Republic of China, to
     8  recognize the cultural and commercial links each possesses and
     9  work to improve them and to create a "sister state"
    10  relationship.
    11  Section 2.  Designation.
    12     The Province of Taiwan, Republic of China, is designated as a
    13  "sister state" to Pennsylvania.
    14  Section 3.  Duties of department.
    15     (a)  General requirements.--The Department of Commerce shall   <--
    16  perform all necessary requirements to secure and maintain the
    17  "sister state" designation as provided for in section 2.


     1     (b)  Trade office.--The Department of Commerce shall           <--
     2  establish a trade office in the Province of Taiwan, Republic of
     3  China for the purpose of promoting trade between the
     4  Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the Province of Taiwan.
     5  Section 4.  Effective date.
     6     This act shall take effect in 60 days.
