        INTRODUCED BY SALVATORE, CONTI, LAVALLE, TARTAGLIONE, EARLL,
           WHITE, WAUGH, BELL, TOMLINSON, GERLACH, BRIGHTBILL, BOSCOLA,
           STAPLETON, GREENLEAF, DENT, COSTA, HART, MOWERY, WENGER,
           LEMMOND, TILGHMAN AND KASUNIC, SEPTEMBER 19, 2000

        AS AMENDED ON THIRD CONSIDERATION, OCTOBER 11, 2000

                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending the act of December 4, 1992 (P.L.761, No.115), entitled
     2     "An act designating May 15th as "Peace Officers Memorial Day"
     3     in Pennsylvania; designating that week of May during which
     4     May 15th occurs as "Police Week" in Pennsylvania; designating
     5     the Sunday during Fire Prevention Week as "Firefighters'
     6     Memorial Sunday"; and requiring that the flags of the United
     7     States and this Commonwealth be flown at half-mast on May
     8     15th," PROVIDING FOR EMERGENCY SERVICES PERSONNEL; AND         <--
     9     further providing for display of flags.

    10     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
    11  hereby enacts as follows:
    12     Section 1.  Section 1(c) THE TITLE AND SECTION 1(B) AND (C)    <--
    13  of the act of December 4, 1992 (P.L.761, No.115), entitled "An
    14  act designating May 15th as "Peace Officers Memorial Day" in
    15  Pennsylvania; designating that week of May during which May 15th
    16  occurs as "Police Week" in Pennsylvania; designating the Sunday
    17  during Fire Prevention Week as "Firefighters' Memorial Sunday";
    18  and requiring that the flags of the United States and this
    19  Commonwealth be flown at half-mast on May 15th," is ARE amended   <--
    20  to read:

     2  DESIGNATING MAY 15TH AS "PEACE OFFICERS MEMORIAL DAY" IN
     3     PENNSYLVANIA; DESIGNATING THAT WEEK OF MAY DURING WHICH MAY
     4     15TH OCCURS AS "POLICE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES PERSONNEL WEEK"
     5     IN PENNSYLVANIA; DESIGNATING THE SUNDAY DURING FIRE
     6     PREVENTION WEEK AS "FIREFIGHTERS' MEMORIAL SUNDAY"; AND
     7     REQUIRING THAT THE FLAGS OF THE UNITED STATES AND THIS
     8     COMMONWEALTH BE FLOWN AT HALF-MAST ON MAY 15TH.
     9  Section 1.  Police Officers memorial.

    11     (B)  PEACE OFFICERS MEMORIAL DAY; POLICE AND EMERGENCY         <--
    12  SERVICES PERSONNEL WEEK.--MAY 15TH IS DESIGNATED AS "PEACE
    13  OFFICERS MEMORIAL DAY" IN PENNSYLVANIA IN HONOR OF PEACE
    14  OFFICERS WHO HAVE BEEN KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY AND DESIGNATE
    15  THAT WEEK OF MAY DURING WHICH MAY 15TH OCCURS AS "POLICE AND
    16  EMERGENCY SERVICES PERSONNEL WEEK" IN PENNSYLVANIA IN
    17  RECOGNITION OF OUR COUNTRY'S COURAGEOUS PEACE OFFICERS AND
    18  EMERGENCY SERVICES PERSONNEL INCLUDING PARAMEDICS, RESCUE SQUAD
    19  AND AMBULANCE SERVICE PERSONNEL.
    20     (c)  Display of flags.--The flag of the United States and the
    21  flag of this Commonwealth shall be flown at half-mast from all
    22  public grounds and buildings of this Commonwealth [on] as
    23  follows:
    24         (1)  On May 15th to honor peace officers who lost their
    25     lives in the line of duty.
    26         (2)  Upon the death of a peace officer, firefighter or
    27     paramedic EMERGENCY SERVICES PERSONNEL killed in the line of   <--
    28     duty. THE TERM EMERGENCY SERVICES PERSONNEL SHALL INCLUDE ANY  <--
    29     PARAMEDIC, RESCUE SQUAD AND AMBULANCE SERVICES PERSONNEL.
    30     Section 2.  This act shall take effect in 60 days.
