Subject: | Cosponsorship of Legislation: Regulation of Out-of-State Pharmacists |
In the near future, I will be reintroducing legislation (previously House Bill 2722) which amends the Controlled Substance, Drug, Device and Cosmetic Act to require out-of-state drug manufacturers and pharmacies to be licensed by the Pennsylvania Board of Pharmacy before they can ship medicines into the Commonwealth. Currently, drug manufacturers and pharmacies in Pennsylvania are required to be licensed, but similar out-of-state businesses are not licensed. Only two other states do not license the out-of-state businesses. This fall, the Centers for Disease Control linked a nationwide outbreak of fungal meningitis to medication shipped from a New England based compounding pharmacy. The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported a case of fungal meningitis linked to the contaminated medication. We need to correct this legislative oversight to ensure quality health care and protect residents from potentially harmful pharmaceuticals. |
