MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 7, 2013 12:21 PM
From: Representative Dave Reed
To: All House members
Subject: Proposed Legislation - Campus Police Officers Retirement Age

In the near future, I intend to reintroduce former House Bill 802, legislation which will allow campus police officers, who are employed at our State System of Higher Education universities, to retire at age 50, without penalty. Currently, full retirement age for campus police officers is age 60.

As you may know, various public safety employees of the Commonwealth are authorized to retire and receive full retirement benefits at age 50. The state employees currently eligible for this benefit include waterways conservation officers employed by the Fish and Boat Commission, Delaware River Port Authority policemen, psychiatric security aides, correction officers, State Police officers, Capitol Police officers, parole agents and enforcement officers of the Liquor Control Board.

As you can see, my proposal is consistent with a long-standing policy of providing public safety employees of the Commonwealth with special retirement benefits that recognize the potentially hazardous nature of public safety employment and the physical and psychological demands of such work. I hope you will consider cosponsoring this proposal, which will provide some equity to campus police officers employed by our State System of Higher Education universities.

Previous cosponsors include: CALTAGIRONE, EVERETT, FARRY, GIBBONS, GINGRICH, HARKINS, HELM, MICOZZIE, MURT, PETRARCA, PYLE, SCAVELLO, AND VEREB.
