Subject: | Permit Electronic Incapacitation Devices (Tazers) to be used in schools by trained teachers and administrators |
In the near future I will introduce legislation that addresses the use of Tasers in schools. My bill will permit the use of Tasers by teachers and administrators who are specifically trained by the Pennsylvania Municipal Officers’ Education and Training Commission. The legislation authorizes the PA Municipal Officers’ Education and Training Commission to create a certification program for the effective training of interested educators and administrators in the proper use of this device. The value of Tasers, legally known as electronic incapacitation devices, has been more than proven by their use by law enforcement personnel around the nation. These devices can take a deadly situation and promptly and safely end it without a fatality. In a school setting, an intruder or student brandishing a knife, razor, firearm or other weapon can be stopped in their tracks and dropped before carrying out further mayhem. An armed guard in a school cannot safeguard an entire building or campus. Having numerous electronic incapacitation devices safely available for use by certified and trained personnel would offer better protection and allow for an effective and non-lethal response to crisis situations. |
