Subject: | Drug-Free School Zones (HB 276 of 2011-12 Session) |
I plan to reintroduce HB 276 from Session 2011-12 which will amend the Crimes Code section dealing with drug-free school zones. This proposed change is based upon a suggestion by a retired state trooper in my district who spent a number of years in drug enforcement. Current law imposes a mandatory minimum sentence of two years imprisonment if an individual over the age of 18 delivers, or possesses with the intent to deliver, any controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a public, private or parochial school or college or university; or within 250 feet of a recreation center, playground or school bus. My legislation will increase the size of a drug-free zone around a recreation center or playground from the current 250 feet to 1,000 feet.
