Subject: | RESOLUTION HONORING THE 101st ANNIVERSARY OF THE GIRL SCOUTS OF AMERICA ON MARCH 12, 2013 |
In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution commemorating the 101st anniversary of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America. From its humble beginnings as 18 girls informally convening in Savannah, Georgia on March 12, 1912, the Girl Scouts organization has grown to 3.7 million girls and adults. Today, more than 59 million women in the U.S. are Girl Scout alumnae. Founder Juliette Gordon Low brought girls of widely varying backgrounds together for the purpose of enjoying the outdoors, fostering self-reliance and resourcefulness, and preparing them for the future as leading women of our nation. Furthermore, and quite fascinating I might add, it was during World War I that the Girl Scouts learned about food conservation, sold war bonds, worked in hospitals, and collected peach pits for use in gas mask filters. It was also during the Great Depression that they led community relief efforts to collect clothing and food for the poor. In addition to the aforementioned feats and activities, the Girl Scouts operated bicycle courier services, grew Victory Gardens, taught survival skills during the 1940’s and 1950’s, and have been firmly entrenched in our society ever since. Therefore, it is due to the foregoing reasons that I wish to acknowledge and commemorate this stellar organization and its role in nurturing the minds, bodies, and spirits of America’s young women. It is my hope that you will join me in expressing this sentiment. If you should have any questions or concerns regarding this resolution, please contact Frances Harris at (717) 772-6955 or fharris@pahouse.net. |
