Subject: | Resolution congratulating Temple University Institute on Disabilities on its 40th anniversary |
In the near future, I plan to offer a non-controversial resolution recognizing the work of the Temple University Institute on Disabilities and offering congratulations as it celebrates its 40th anniversary. The Institute, founded in 1973, began by providing direct services and training through its work with the Woodhaven Center, a residential facility for people with intellectual disabilities. It later was nationally recognized for advocacy and research efforts centered on the closure of the Pennhurst Center, and in the 1980s began to develop support models for Pennsylvanians with disabilities and their families outside of the institutional models. Over the years, the Institute has been recognized statewide, nationally and internationally in the areas of leadership development, inclusive education, quality of life assessment, assistive technology and the criminal justice system. It continues to work in partnership with statewide advocacy and self-advocacy groups, centers for independent living, state government, academia and other stakeholders. I hope you will join with me in congratulating and honoring the Temple University Institute on Disabilities on its 40th anniversary. The Institute is a leader in the field of disabilities and continues to advance support models that positively impact the lives of people in Pennsylvania and set a new standard of service in the field, fulfilling the Institute’s vision of: “…a society where all people are valued and respected, and where all people have the knowledge, opportunity and power to improve their lives and the lives of others.” |
