Subject: | Juneteenth National Freedom Day |
In the near future, I intend to introduce a resolution that recognizes the third Saturday in June as "Juneteenth National Freedom Day" in Pennsylvania. From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of Juneteenth has spread across the United States and beyond. Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Today, Juneteenth commemorates African-American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is recognized as a state holiday in approximately 37 states nationwide. If you have any questions regarding this resolution, please contact Germaine Brown at 717.772.9850 or at gbrown@pahouse.net. |
