Subject: | Co-Sponsorship Resolution honoring Nelson Mandela |
In the near future I plan to introduce a resolution honoring Nelson Mandela for his life-long dedication to building a more equitable and united world. Nelson Mandela's accomplishments have been acknowledged by more than 250 awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize and the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom. After eight years of exposure to the inhumanities of apartheid, a system of legalized segregation policies enforced by the ruling National Party, Nelson Mandela began working to promote the advancement of human rights in South Africa . In 1944, he joined the African National Congress, a liberation group that opposed the apartheid policies enforced by the National Party. Nelson has a law degree from the University of Witwatersrand and he served over 27 years in jail for sabotage, treason and conspiracy against the government. He was later released from prison by South Africa's new President F.W. de Klerk. Please join me in honoring Nelson Mandela for his lifelong efforts to promote the advancement of human rights in South Africa. |
