MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 21, 2013 03:46 PM
From: Representative Vanessa Lowery Brown
To: All House members
Subject: RESOLUTION: RECOGNIZING AND HONORING THE EFFORTS OF THE PA VOTER ID COALITION

TO: Members of the House of Representatives
FROM: Representative Vanessa Lowery Brown
DATE: June 21, 2013
SUBJECT: Co-sponsorship: Resolution Recognizing and Honoring the Efforts of the PA Voter ID Coalition
In the near future I will be introducing a resolution recognizing and honoring the civic and social contributions of the PA Voter ID Coalition.

As we all aware, last year the Pennsylvania General Assembly had adopted changes to our Commonwealth’s election laws, that, among other things, required Pennsylvanian’s to produce a photo ID as a condition for participating in the electoral process.

As a result, there was a huge segment of Pennsylvanians who were galvanized and became civically engaged relative to this particular issue. Irrespective of whether you are proponent or an opponent of the aforementioned adopted changes, the one common denominator which existed between these two polar forces was the articulated aim of preserving the integrity of Pennsylvania’s electoral process (The Commonwealth Court is now charged with the task of determining the appropriate means of achieving this goal).

Nevertheless, in a true democracy, power and influence is by nature vested in the collective populace. However, we as legislators and representatives of Pennsylvania’s collective populace, at times, tend to subscribe to the idea that substantive change can only be wrought from within the hallowed corridors of this General Assembly. In response to such a mentality, the PA Voter ID Coalition through its efforts, effectively and in a sobering manner proved such a notion to be an utter fallacy.

As such, I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to please join me in recognizing and honoring the PA Voter ID Coalition for its civic and social contributions.

If you wish to join me as a co-sponsor of this non-partisan measure, please contact Brandon J. Flood at (717) 772-6955 or BFlood@pahouse.net.
