Subject: | Resolution Commemorating the 1983 Beirut Bombing |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution commemorating the 30th anniversary of the terrorist bombing of the U.S. Marine Corps barracks in Beirut, Lebanon. On October 23, 1983, 241 members of the armed forces of the United States, including 220 members of the U.S. Marine Corps, were killed in Beirut, Lebanon. The terrorist bombing was the deadliest day for the U.S. Marine Corps since World War II, when the U.S. Marine Corps fought to secure Iwo Jima. Thirty years after the horrific bombing, terrorism continues to be a threat to the international community, and young men and women in the armed forces of the United States continue to preserve freedom by fighting terrorism around the world.
