Subject: | Temporary Workers Employee Right to Know |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation establishing requirements for employment agencies in the provision of pertinent information, fairness in fees charged and honesty in the advertising of jobs as they pertain to temporary workers. Frequently, employment agencies fail to present temporary workers with the necessary, fundamental and basic information the worker needs to understand and carry out their duties. Simple details such as the name, address, phone number of the employment agency; special equipment and clothing needed for the position are often omitted. Consequently, the employment agency may charge already economically challenged job seekers inflated fees associated with obtaining a position, such as contract fees, transportation fees and fees for drug screenings. This legislation will ensure that temporary workers in the Commonwealth are supplied with the basic information and details they need to carry out their work in a safe and prepared manner. Fees charged to temporary workers will be limited and strict guidelines will be established regarding the advertising of temporary positions by employment agencies under this legislation. Safeguarding the rights of our workers, especially during challenging economic times, remains an integral goal of this legislature. Our workers have a right to know the details regarding the position that they have signed on to fulfill. Once a temporary worker accepts a position, they have a right to feel secure in the knowledge that the employment agency has treated them fairly and communicated in an open and honest fashion. Ensuring temporary workers in the state are furnished with key information regarding their job is imperative to protecting the rights of these workers while making certain that law abiding employers are treated fairly and amicably. I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation. |
