Subject: | Resolution Commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the Federal Endangered Species Act of 1973 |
In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution commemorating the 40th anniversary of the federal Endangered Species Act of 1973. The federal Endangered Species Act of 1973 was signed into law by President Nixon on December 28, 1973. This act provides for the protection of both plant and animal species, as well as the implementation of recovery plans and the protection of critical habitats. In its nearly 40-year history, this act has been more than 99 percent effective in preventing the extinction of wildlife under its protection, while placing hundreds of species on the path to recovery. To many Americans, this measure reflects the resolve of a society mature enough to guarantee a future not just for itself, but for the rest of creation, even if difficult choices must be made. As one of the best tools our country has to ensure that future generations will be able to enjoy our rich wildlife and biological heritage, the act established a commitment by the American people to work together to achieve this goal. If you would like to co-sponsor this resolution calling on the Pennsylvania House of Representatives to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the signing of the federal Endangered Species Act of 1973, please contact Nancy Porvaznik at 717-783-1079 or NPorvazn@pahouse.net. |
