Subject: | Co-Sponsor- Resolution Designating February 8, 2014 as "Peripartum Cardiomyopathy Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania |
In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution designating February 8, 2014 as "Peripartum Cardiomyopathy Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania. Peripartum Cardiomyopathy is a rare disorder in which a weakened heart is diagnosed within the final month of pregnancy or within 5 months after delivery. In the United States, Peripartum Cardiomyopathy complicates 1 in every 1,300 - 4,000 deliveries and may occur in childbearing women of any age. Recent effective treatments have progressively improved both survival and recovery (95% or more), without the need for heart transplant, giving women improved heart function and the ability to live a full life. Therefore, it is important that we designate February 8, 2014 as "Peripartum Cardiomyopathy Awareness Day" and continue to research more effective treatments and early detection.
