Subject: | Hibernian Heritage Month Resolution |
I will soon introduce a resolution that will designate March 2014 as "Hibernian Heritage Month" in Pennsylvania. I hope you will join me in sponsoring this resolution, which will recognize the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) and its many chapters throughout the Commonwealth. More specifically, the resolution will honor the organization for its many charitable works that improve the quality of life within the Commonwealth. Please note that the AOH will mark its 178th year since its founding in 1836 in Pennsylvania and New York. However, the organization has roots that date back 300 years when ancestors of its members risked their lives to keep the Irish language, culture and Roman Catholic religion alive in their beloved Ireland. There are more than 80,000 members of the Hibernians in 46 states, Canada and Ireland. Further, The Ancient Order of Hibernians has chapters in the following counties in Pennsylvania: Adams, Allegheny, Berks, Bucks, Cambria, Carbon, Cumberland, Dauphin, Delaware, Lackawanna, Lebanon, Lehigh, Luzerne, Lycoming, Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton, Northumberland, Philadelphia, Schuylkill and York, all of which include thousands of members. Those chapters and the others nationwide support a multitude of charities, from the Women’s Resource Center to myeloma cancer research to various food and clothing banks and pantries, as well as various education scholarships, family assistance programs and veterans’ services. For those reasons and more, the chapters and the full organization deserve recognition and appreciation. I thank you in advance for your consideration. |
