Subject: | Resolution Supporting the City of Philadelphia’s Efforts to Become the First World Heritage City in the United States |
In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution expressing support for the City of Philadelphia’s efforts to obtain membership in the Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC) and thereby become the first World Heritage City in the United States. Officials from Philadelphia recently hosted Denis Ricard, Secretary General of the OWHC. The intent of this meeting and accompanying tour was to introduce Secretary General Ricard to the cultural and historical significance of the area so that he will advocate for Philadelphia's admission into this exclusive group of cities. The OWHC, which was founded in September 1993, is comprised of 250 cities located throughout the world. These cities represent more than 130 million people and include internationally renowned cities such as Brussels and Warsaw. Members of the OWHC exchange information on matters of conservation and management and participate in conferences, seminars, and workshops dealing with the challenges to be met in the realm of management and strategies pertaining to the preservation and development of historic cities. As the home of Independence Hall, which is already recognized as a World Heritage site by the United Nations, Philadelphia is uniquely positioned to obtain membership in the OWHC. Inclusion of the city in this select group will not only increase tourism throughout southeastern Pennsylvania, but it will also help to promote our nation’s democratic ideals around the world. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution. |
