Subject: | Co-sponsorship Memo for National Healthy School Awards |
In the near future, we plan to introduce a resolution recognizing and honoring the seven Pennsylvania recipients of the 2014 National Healthy School Award from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. At its annual Leaders Summit on September 12-13, 2014, the Alliance for a Healthier Generation recognized 250 schools nationwide for implementing initiatives to cultivate healthier environments for their students. Seven of these distinguished schools are located in four of our Commonwealth’s school districts:
Each of these schools meet or exceed updated federal nutrition standards, offer school breakfast daily, met the beverage requirements for Smart Snacks in School standards prior to the July 1, 2014 requirement, implement district wellness policies and annual progress reports, and provide students with at least 60 minutes of physical education weekly. While Pennsylvania has a lower rate of childhood obesity than other states at 26.5% (43rd in the nation), a nutritious diet and regular physical activity are vital parts of a healthy lifestyle for all children. We applaud these schools for taking a holistic approach to education with their outstanding efforts to provide healthy environments for their students. Please join us in honoring these Pennsylvania schools for this exceptional achievement. Thank you for your consideration. |
