Subject: | Condolence Resolution Honoring Hector Camacho Matias |
In the near future, I intend to introduce legislation to recognize the life of Puerto Rican professional boxer Hector Luís Camacho Matias and honor his achievements and contributions to Puerto Rico and the sport of boxing. Popularly known as “Macho Camacho,” Héctor Camacho was one of boxing’s most flamboyant and entertaining fighters. Despite Camacho’s troubled life outside of the boxing ring, his aggressive style led him to a number of victories in the 1980s and 1990s. Over the course of his career, Camacho fought high-profile bouts against Oscar De La Hoya, Felix Trinidad, Julio Cesar Chavez and Sugar Ray Leonard. Camacho’s record included 79 wins, 6 ties, and 3 losses, with 38 knockouts. Sadly, the beloved fighter suffered fatal injuries on November 20, 2012, in his hometown of Bayamon, Puerto Rico and was pronounced dead three days later. The loss of Hector Camacho profoundly affected the boxing world and the many people of Puerto Rico. Henry Neumann, Secretary of Puerto Rico’s Sports and Recreation Department, expressed that everyone in Puerto Rico loved Camacho and that he was an athlete who transcended the barriers of his country not only for his skill inside the ring but for his personality. Please join me in recognizing the life, achievements and contributions of Héctor Luís Camacho Matías. |
