Subject: | Prescription forgery legislation - Bill 2 of 3 |
Prescription drug abuse is a growing problem. According to national statistics nearly 6-million Americans abuse prescription drugs. The National Community Pharmacists Association estimated the impact on U.S. health care costs to be more than $100 million. The Drug Enforcement Agency has placed Pennsylvania on the list of states that have been hit hardest by the rise in prescription drug abuse. I would like to re-introduce legislation from last session, Senate Bill 786. This bill would Amend Title 18 (Crimes and Offenses) providing that a person commits a felony of the third degree if he acquires or attempts to acquire a prescription or prescription order by knowingly misrepresenting or knowingly withholding information from a practitioner for the sole purpose of procuring controlled substances for abuse or sale. Members who co-sponsored this legislation during last session were Senators Brewster, Browne, Fontana, Kasunic, Mensch, Rafferty, and Tartaglione. If you have any additional questions regarding this legislation, please call our Harrisburg office at 717-787-9608. |
Introduced as SB612
