Subject: | Firefighter Retirement |
In the near future, I plan on re-introducing legislation defining Commonwealth Firefighters and Firefighter Instructors as state employees for purposes of eligibility in the Pennsylvania State Employees Retirement System. My bill would cover firefighters who perform specialized firefighting, fire prevention or fire inspection of buildings and aircraft owned or maintained by the Commonwealth. Firefighter instructors are those who are engaged in the specialized training of emergency services personnel and allied professionals at the State Fire Academy. These individuals, who put their lives on the line every day protecting not only the people of our great Commonwealth but also its forests, parks and historically significant buildings, deserve to be given the opportunity to participate in the retirement system along with their brethren service persons such as state police officers, enforcement officers, and corrections officers. This legislation was SB 1215 of the 2011-12 session. Previous cosponsors include: Costa, Tartaglione, Brewster and Farnese. |
