Subject: | Closing the Megan's Law Loophole |
In the near future I plan to re-introduce legislation designed to close the loophole in Pennsylvania’s Megan’s Law. My bill would amend Title 18 making it mandatory for all registered sex offenders living in PA to register every time they change their address. As it’s written now, only offenders that have committed a crime and convicted in PA must register whenever they change addresses. If an individual is a convicted sex offender in another state and moves into PA, they only have to register with the state police when they first move in. Once in Pennsylvania, they can change residences without registering. This defeats the purpose of the sex offender registry and this loophole needs closed. This bill was introduced last session as SB 721. Senators WASHINGTON , KASUNIC , RAFFERTY , COSTA , VOGEL, FONTANA , EICHELBERGER , WAUGH , FOLMER , D. WHITE , BROWNE , ERICKSON , MENSCH , ALLOWAY, YAW, YUDICHAK , HUGHES , BREWSTER, STACK and FARNESE were co-sponsors of this bill. If you have any questions, please contact Josh Myers of my staff at 787-5400 or by email to jmyers@pasenate.com. Thank you for your consideration. |
