Subject: | 100th Anniversary of the American Cancer Society |
In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution to commemorate the American Cancer Society’s 100th Anniversary on May 22nd, 2013. In 1913, 15 physicians and businessmen in New York City, who were determined to raise awareness about cancer, formed the American Society for the Control of Cancer, later renamed American Cancer Society (ACS). Over the years, the ACS made the following strides in cancer research and public service: - 1947, the first successful chemotherapy treatment - 1971, the National Cancer Act passed and began the “War on Cancer" - 1976, the California Division of ACS hosts the first Great American Smokeout® - 1997, the ACS launches the first 24/7 cancer information call center - 2003, the ACS research confirms the link between obesity and many types of cancer - 2012, the United State celebrates a 20% decline in cancer death rates |
