Subject: | Federal Benefit screening for Foster Care |
I plan on introducing a new version of SB170 from last session. Previous co-sponsors were: Costa, Tartaglione, Wozniak, and Kitchen. While this version of the bill is slightly different from last session’s bill, the goal is the same: ensure that every child in the foster care is provided the opportunity to succeed once they leave the foster care system. This bill would require that a child in the foster care system is screened for any federal benefits that they may be eligible before leaving the foster-care system. The agency overseeing the care of the youth would be responsible to review at age 16, potential eligibility of federal benefits, such as SSI. If the youth is determined to be eligible, an application will be completed. For your reference, I have attached a draft of the new version of the bill. Please join me in providing children in foster care the assistance they need to succeed. If you have any questions, please contact my office. |
