Subject: | Professional Psychologists Practice Act Amendments |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation that will update the Professional Psychologists Practice Act for the first time since 1975. Since that time there have been many changes in education and practice of providing mental health services to the public. The proposed changes do not expand the scope of practice of psychology. Further, the proposed provisions would not altar the qualifications to become a psychologist. They do, however, clarify the scope of practice of psychology, eliminate current exemptions to the practice of psychology that are not in the public interest and improve the ability of the State Board of Psychology to enforce disciplinary actions on psychologists. Finally, these amendments will advance consumer protection by ensuring that all those calling themselves psychologists and performing the functions of the profession are properly licensed by the state. |
