Subject: | Macular Degeneration Awareness Month Resolution |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating June 2013 as Macular Degeneration Awareness Month in Pennsylvania. Macular degeneration is a progressive eye disease which attacks the macula of the eye where the sharpest central vision occurs. Individuals afflicted can lose all but their peripheral vision. Macular Degeneration affects as many as 15 million Americans and age related Macular Degeneration is the number one cause of vision loss in adults over 60 years of age. While there is no cure, advances in treatment have resulted in improved vision using both laser treatments and intravitreal medications. Visual rehabilitation and visual aids are also effective in assisting those with macular degeneration. The Macular Vision Research Foundation funds research and education on this important issue. Please join me in designating June 2013 Macular Degeneration Awareness Month so that Pennsylvanians can become more familiar with the symptoms of the disease and with the ways we can research, educate on, and fight Macular Degeneration. |
