Subject: | Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month |
In the near future, I will introduce a resolution recognizing September 2013 as “Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. Ovarian cancer is one of the most deadly of women’s cancers. Pennsylvania ranks fifth in the nation for the most ovarian cancer deaths, with an estimated 810 deaths in 2012. One in 71 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year. Most cases are diagnosed in the later stages when the cancer has spread, and therefore the prognosis is poor. However, if diagnosed and treated early, the five-year survival rate is over 90 percent. Increased awareness of ovarian cancer and its symptoms can play an important role in empowering women to advocate for their own health. I hope you will join me in cosponsoring this resolution and raising awareness on this critical women’s health issue. |
