Subject: | United Nations International Day of Peace Resolution |
We plan to introduce a resolution honoring the United Nations International Day of Peace, occurring on September 21, 2013. Over thirty years ago, the General Assembly of the United Nations declared the International Day of Peace to be a day focused on strengthening peace efforts across the world. In 2001, they voted again to make September 21st of each year the day on which Peace Day is celebrated, by encouraging a global cease-fire and non-violence on this day worldwide. In 2009 the United States Senate supported, through resolution, the goals and ideals of Peace Day. Those goals and ideals have been supported through efforts that include educational discussions and public awareness campaigns, immunization campaigns, art exhibitions, sporting events, peace walks, and a wide range of other community activities. Participation in Peace Day activities in Pennsylvania continues to grow each year, with activities abounding from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia. The initiative, Peace Day Philly, encourages Peace Day participation in the Philadelphia region. This year, more than 30 events and activities are being held in conjunction with this initiative. The theme of this year’s International Day of Peace is “Education For Peace.” We encourage you to support the participation in peace and non-violence activities across Pennsylvania by honoring those working to reduce violence and sustain a culture of peace in our communities. |
