Subject: | Co-Sponsorship of Resolution: National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month |
In the near future, I intend to introduce a resolution recognizing the month of September as National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month in Pennsylvania. Each year, this month of awareness offers an opportunity for individuals to learn about spinal cord injuries, recognize the daily challenges encountered by injured persons and acknowledge the achievements of those Americans living with a spinal cord injury. Every 48 minutes, someone in the U.S. is paralyzed as a result of a spinal cord injury. Today, more than 270,000 Americans, 44,000 of which are veterans, suffer from spine-related injuries. An additional twelve thousand such injuries occur annually. The Department of Veterans’ Affairs, through its efforts to aid those living with a spinal cord injury and support the advancement of spinal cord injury research, is a leading advocate for this awareness month. Further, the Buoniconti Fund—a group I have been honored to work with since my own injury occurred—is launching its largest effort to help find a cure for paralysis. The campaign urges everyone to stand up for those who cannot. In recognition of all those affected by and working to address spinal cord-related injuries, I hope you will join me in recognizing September 2013 as National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month. |
