Subject: | Military Family Relief Assistance |
In the coming weeks I plan to introduce SB 1139, legislation that will increase the maximum amount of awards available to service members and their families under the Military Family Relief Assistance Program (51 Pa.C.S. §7319) and extend the program through 2022. Under my proposal, the maximum amount of relief granted that could be granted to an applicant would be increased to $10,000 per event or episode from the current maximum of $3,500 which is established in program guidelines. The total amount available to the service member and all eligible family members in a 12 month period would also be increased from the current $3,500 to $20,000. Finally, the proposal also includes a $2,500,000 appropriation beginning in FY 14-15. This appropriation would supplement moneys received for the program through the current income tax check-off donation to ensure that enough revenue exists in the program to provide this much needed assistance to military personnel and their families. As a member of the PA National Guard, I see countless families who struggle financially when a loved one is called up to active duty. My bill would go a long way in helping those who are serving on the home front to maintain some sense of normalcy. If you wish to co-sponsor this legislation and have any additional questions, please contact my Harrisburg office. Thank you. |
