| Subject: | Memo #37 -- Pulmonary Fibrosis Awareness Month |
| In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating September 2014 as “Pulmonary Fibrosis Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. Pulmonary Fibrosis is a lung disorder characterized by a progressive scarring known as fibrosis and deterioration of the lungs, which slowly robs its patients of their ability to breathe. It affects at least 200,000 Americans, with an estimated 48,000 new cases diagnosed each year, and has no FDA treatment or cure. Studies have revealed there is a genetic component to this disease in 15 percent of the cases. Pulmonary Fibrosis is difficult to diagnose, and an estimated two-thirds of patients die within five years of diagnosis. A patient’s only survival is a lung transplant. During the month of September, the Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2001, seeks to educate and advocate for patients and their families and build national awareness and fundraising in the race to find treatments and a cure of Pulmonary Fibrosis. |
