Subject: | Improved Towing Powers for Cities of the Second Class |
In the near future I will be re-introducing Senate Bill 582. The amendment to Title 75 (Vehicles) enables second class cities to better handle abandoned cars on vacant lots by permitting the towing of dangerous vehicles in a more expeditious fashion. The amendment will allow a city of the second class to designate an employee, most likely someone from the Bureau of Building Inspection, to sign the necessary paperwork to permit for an abandoned vehicle to be towed from vacant private property. The city will still be required to have a police officer authorize the removal of the vehicle and to provide proper notification to the owner. Abandoned cars are not only eyesores. They create public safety problems that include children playing in them, havens for pests such as rats, and places for illegal drugs to be hidden. Removing them from our city streets is a priority. In the previous session Senate Bill 582 was cosponsored by Senators Fontana, Costa, MJ White, Washington, and Brewster. |
