Subject: | Legislation Regarding Recycling at Turnpike Rest Areas |
the near future, I will be re-introducing legislation (House Bill 857) that would require the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission to make recycling containers for aluminum, glass, and plastic available to the public at all Turnpike rest areas. More than 510,000 motorists travel on the Turnpike each day, many of whom stop at rest areas during their trips, in part, to discard trash and recyclables in an environmental manner. However, while the Turnpike Commission has placed recycling containers at some rest areas, it is not required to do so under current law. As such, the legislation that I will be re-introducing would ensure that recycling containers are available to the public at all Turnpike rest areas. In addition, the legislation would authorize the Turnpike Commission to retain all proceeds received from recycled items, which would provide a small, but much-needed revenue boost to the Commission during these tough economic times. I hope you will consider signing on as a co-sponsor of this important measure. |
