MEMORANDUM

From: Representative Thomas P. Murt
To: All House members
Subject: Certified Registered Nurse Practitioners to Supervise Professional Wrestling Exhibitions & Contests (Prior HB 1649)

In the near future, I plan to reintroduce legislation that would permit promoters and facility operators to employ certified registered nurse practitioners during professional wrestling exhibitions and contests.

Currently, Title 5 requires promoters and facility operators to employ a physician during wrestling exhibitions and contests. The physician must observe the physical condition of the participants and is authorized to terminate the contest when severe injury could occur. My legislation would permit promoters and facility operators to employ a certified registered nurse practitioner instead of a physician to fulfill this responsibility during professional wrestling exhibitions and contests.

I believe that certified registered nurse practitioners have sufficient medical training that will adequately maintain the safety of participants during wresting exhibitions and contests. The availability of physicians to supervise these events can be limited, and permitting the employment of certified registered nurse practitioners will provide promoters and facility operators with a safe alternative when organizing these wrestling events.
