Subject: | Resolution designating May 11, 2015, as “National Women’s Check-Up Day” in Pennsylvania. |
In the near future, I intend to introduce a resolution designating May 11, 2015, as “National Women’s Check-Up Day” in Pennsylvania. National Women’s Check-Up Day is observed annually by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to promote the importance of regular check-ups as essential measures in the early detection of diseases and other serious illnesses within women. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, regular checkups assist in the early detection of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, mental health illnesses, sexually transmitted diseases, and other conditions. It is recommended that women receive screenings for breast cancer, sexually transmitted diseases, colorectal cancer, depression, diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, and HIV. It is important to note that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) allows women to receive preventive screenings without copays. Women should discuss with their healthcare provider which screening tests are right for them, when they should have them, and how often. Screenings and regular care can help women lower their risks of many health conditions. On National Women’s Check-Up Day, women are encouraged to participate by contacting their current health care providers to schedule check-ups and screening services. By designating May 11, 2015, as “National Women’s Check-Up Day” in Pennsylvania we are raising awareness of the need to increase preventive care for women, while encouraging women to take an active role in their health by visiting their physician on a regular basis. |
