Session of 2015 - 2016 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 4, 2015 01:44 PM
From: Representative James R. Roebuck, Jr.
To: All House members
Subject: Provisional Vocational Certificate Expansion

In the near future, I will be introducing legislation to provide a clearer interpretation of the credits needed to obtain a Vocational II certification and the time-frame in which they are obtained.

Currently, regulation requires that 18 credits are needed to obtain a Vocational I certificate which is valid for six years. In order to obtain a Vocational II certificate, 60 credits are needed along with three years of satisfactory teaching. One may interpret this as a total of 78 credits are needed to obtain Vocational II certification within a six-year period, with three years of satisfactory teaching. The confusion is the 18 of those 78 credits are to be obtained within the six-year period, leaving the remaining 60 credits to be obtained with no clear time frame.

This legislation will clear up any discrepancies by allowing a vocational teacher to obtain 78 credits within an eight year timeframe; which includes the three years of satisfactory teaching in order to gain a Vocational Instructional II certificate. This legislation will eliminate the possibility for confusion on credits and timeframe since there is no specific timeframe for a Vocational II certificate to coincide with the additional 60 credits.
