Subject: | Wrongfully Convicted Compensation |
In the near future, I will be introducing legislation that provides compensation, specifically child support damages, for wrongfully convicted individuals in the Commonwealth. Persons found not guilty and imprisoned solely as the result of a wrongful conviction, should qualify for money provided by the state to make payments and interest on child support that accumulated during the time served in prison that were not paid. Pennsylvania is one of 28 states without a law entitling the wrongfully convicted to claim compensation, despite a history of 9 exonerations. Under this bill, the exonerated will not only receive child support damages but will also be awarded $50,000 for each year of incarceration, lost wages, medical and dental expenses incurred after release, court and attorney fees, reimbursement for any tuition and fees paid for education, an and any reasonable costs incurred by claimant for immediate services rendered after release i.e. housing, transportation, etc. If you have any questions please contact Germaine Miller at 717-772-9850 or gmiller@pahouse.net |
